TOKYO : Toyota Motor Corp., seeking to stay in pole position in the fuel efficient car race, unveiled plans Friday to build a new factory producing batteries for eco-friendly vehicles.

The move comes amid growing competition between Japanese automakers to tap demand for economical cars amid soaring prices at the pump.

Toyota’s joint venture with its partner Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. plans to spend 20 billion yen (192 million dollars) to build a plant in Kosai in central Shizuoka Prefecture, said Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma.

Toyota has taken a lead in sales of hybrids, selling more than one million of its Prius model — the world’s first mass-produced hybrid — since its launch about a decade ago.

Salary hike won’t keep pace with inflation: Hay survey

21 05 2008

[Source: AsiaOne.Com ]

EMPLOYEES in Singapore need to tighten their belts, going by the findings of a survey on how inflation would affect salary increment.

In the survey conducted in March and April this year by global management consultancy Hay Group, 250 Singapore-based companies from the private and public sectors were asked to indicate their salary increases last year and their projections for the next 12 months.

Although 75 per cent of the companies surveyed said they would factor inflation into salary reviews over the next 12 months, most employers actually plan to maintain only the same percentage increment as the previous year.

SINGAPORE : The US economy is heading towards a recession and this will become more apparent in the second half of this year, according to analysts at a conference organised by Merrill Lynch on Wednesday.

But they said Asia will not be as badly affected, and its strong consumer spending will buffet the region from the US slowdown.

Merrill Lynch said the world’s largest economy is already in a recession, and it expects to see a prolonged L-shaped recovery. This means the US may take a longer time to emerge from the economic doldrums. But Merrill said this is not necessarily negative for Asia.
